We Are One
1As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. 2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
The Toronto PanAm games have come to a close and the theme song is ‘Together, we are one.’ Sporting events bring people from different nations and different cultures. The theme song has quite a catchy tune and great lyrics that describe how we are beautiful, we are all the same and we’re strong when we walk together.
Paul was encouraging the early disciples that we are to live a life worthy of the calling that we have received. Unity depends not on others, but on our own decision to act. When we make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit, then we can do a lot as a community. God’s church can only thrive when all members are one in Spirit and strive to the same purpose. It’s not about I or me, but it’s all about what we can all do collectively.
