We Are One Body
Romans 12:4-5 (NIV)
4 For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.
This passage provides a great illustration of how every member of the Church plays a part. It isn’t enough to just believe. We are called to belong. A body has many parts and each body part does its part. It would be ridiculous to say that we do not need a certain body part because we do not see it. We were created for community. We cannot fulfill God’s purpose for our lives by ourselves. Within the family of believers, we are connected to each other through the blood of Christ. To Paul, the Church was not just a building or an organization. He describes it as a body, an organism that is a living body. When a body is not active, the muscles begin to atrophy and start to shrink. We need to be active as a body of Christ so that we can grow.
