Watch Your Words
26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.
When I watched television or a movie as a kid or a teenager, I don’t recall as much cursing as there is in current movies. It has become more common and acceptable in this world for cursing to take place. I remember before I followed Christ how I could so easily use vulgar land rude language. I was also taking the Lord’s name in vain and thought nothing of it.
Cursing is one area that gets a lot of attention, but using your words to verbally attack and emotionally abuse somebody is also something to consider. James says that we need to keep a tight rein on our tongue, otherwise we deceive ourselves. Our religion is worthless if we are not using our words to empower and to encourage. Earlier in the chapter, it speaks of not getting angry and being patient. It’s something that I do need to be mindful of in terms of finding words that encourage and not to criticize.
