Romans 8:6 (NIV)
6 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.
There are parts of the world in which there is war and fighting. Some of these civil wars go on for years or decades. I feel for those who lose their loved ones to bloodshed and hatred. Some lose all of their possessions and their home as they are forced to flee their own homeland and become refugees in a foreign land. Despite living in peace in my city and my country, there is a war that I need to be aware of. That battle is the spiritual battle that goes on for our souls.
We live in a society where we are controlled by fleshly and worldly desires. If we want to live in a way that can change our world, then we need to live in the Spirit and not in the flesh. This means putting our fleshly desires under the control of the Holy Spirit and not let our emotions or mind rule us. Jesus also had to fight the fleshly desire as he prayed at the Garden of Gethsemane, prior to being arrested. There is a battle between Spirit and flesh so that they are always at odds against each other.
This battle is a long battle that will last my lifetime. I need to have my defenses up, but also need to be on the offensive by studying God’s word and keeping in prayer to live in the Spirit. It’s up to me to decide whether I back down into a corner and let Satan have his way with me or to call upon God to help me in this battle. A great example is how Moses lifted up his staff before God during battle. We are not alone in our battle against Satan. God is on our side and He has a winning army of angels to help us.
