The Lord Promised
Joshua 14:10-12 (NIV)
10“Now then, just as the Lord promised, he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old! 11I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then.12Now give me this hill country that the Lord promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, the Lord helping me, I will drive them out just as he said.”
Caleb was a warrior and follow in the footsteps of Jesus who climbed Mount Calvary and often went up into the mountains to spend time with God. Of all the land that someone could want, the flat lands are suitable for farming and for grazing the animals. However, Caleb was a man of the mountains and preferred the rugged terrains. He’s eighty-five years old and claims to be as strong as the day that Moses sent him out many years earlier. Caleb knew the promises that God made and he intended to call God on that promise as long as he kept being faithful to God. He was in a foreign land with the Anakites living there with large fortified cities, yet he had faith that God will help this eighty-five year old man with his group of men to drive them out and claim that land.
It would have been easier to claim land where there were no enemies. Caleb had a different spirit from the passive person. He saw the enemy as an incentive and not as a deterrent. He didn’t see it as an obstacle to claiming this hill country. In my life, I need to see obstacles as part of life and that I should take them on without fear or hesitation. I need to trust in God to help me get through every obstacle and be as energetic as Caleb was in his battle for his promised land.
