35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written:
“For your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”
37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
I recall watching a few episodes of Survivor and Man Vs Wild on television. These are reality television shows in which a camera follows the contestant to see how they fare in surviving if they were stranded and isolated in a certain region of the world. It certainly entertaining to see how much they know and what practical lessons you can learn on how to survive. Other than that, there is nothing in my life that closely resembles facing death on a daily basis.
Paul had a different life and his life was very difficult. He preached the gospel of Christ in areas that were hostile to Christianity. The travel was also very difficult with shipwrecks, robberies and going without food for days. Paul was able to survive and that through Christ, we are conquerors in this world. We are not conquering the physical world, but we are winning the spiritual battle since we have God on our side. With this in mind, life shouldn’t just be about surviving, but in being a winner and being successful.
