Safety Equipment

Ephesians 6:10-17(NIV)

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

I had some friends come over this past weekend and they mentioned that their son was joining the football team in his school.  They said it was very difficult to get football equipment and had to travel to the other side of the city to get the equipment.  The father said that he watched the movie Concussion with his son to ensure that he understands what happens after repeated blows to the head.  A helmet may be proper safety equipment, but it doesn’t prevent a concussion from occurring after a big hit.

Paul says that the full armor of God is all we need to protect ourselves from the devil’s schemes.  We may get knocked around by Satan, but God provides us with everything we need to stay safe spiritually.  The armor of God includes many areas that we need to invest in.  The Word of God isn’t the only thing that can protect us as we need to be active in righteousness and with our faith.  It looks like it will be a life-long battle, but we are not alone in our fight.  We have each other in our congregation and we can also rely on God to help us in our need.  God provides us with the safety equipment we need in this spiritual journey.
