Reward in Heaven
11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision:
1 “Do not be afraid, Abram.
I am your shield,
your very great reward.”
When we were in grade school, we remember the reward system that was given out. Shiny gold stars for doing something well. The reward system motivates us to do more than we would normally do. Children are motivated if there is a reward for them. As an adult, we may have goals to exercise or learn something new. If it was left to our own motivation, we also would be watching television, using the computer, or doing something else with our time. If we have the internal motivation that comes from within on how it will benefit somebody else, we may take action and do something good.
Jesus teaches us that no matter how tough we have it here on earth, whether we are persecuted or not, there is a reward waiting for us in heaven. We should rejoice and be glad that we are given such a blessing and a reward that doesn’t perish, spoil or fade. This reward system should motivate us to do whatever we can on earth to please God in our daily living at home, work or school. So as I live my life, I can understand that God won’t give me a ‘Fail’ unless I quit on him. As long as I continue on this journey, persevering and counting my blessings, God will continue to be my sheidl and my very great reward.
