Put to Death
5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.
Some countries will give the death sentence to somebody who has committed 1st degree murder. Others will just give a 20 to 25 year life sentence. When the judge sees that a person is dangerous to the community, they want that person locked up and put away. In the United States, some states still offer the death penalty through lethal injection.
The earthly pleasures that we may have indulged in the past cannot continue in the life of those who follow Christ. Paul is putting out a very strong warning. He is not suggesting that we try to change or reduce the amount of time we spend on these earthly pleasures. He is saying that it needs to be put to death and never to reappear. I need to see that these sins are dangerous to me and to those around me. It can’t just be locked away; it needs to be put to death. Easier said than done, unless we rely on the power of the cross and the Spirit of God to lead us to this victory.
