Only One God

1 Corinthians 8:4-8(NIV)

So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that “An idol is nothing at all in the world” and that “There is no God but one.” For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”), yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.

But not everyone possesses this knowledge. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat sacrificial food they think of it as having been sacrificed to a god, and since their conscience is weak, it is defiled. But food does not bring us near to God; we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do.

I was at a recent funeral service for my cousin’s grandfather.  I didn’t know his grandfather, but my family went to pay our respects and joined in a service where a group from a Buddhist temple performed the ceremony.  Offering of incense, fruit and flowers were made to the deceased.  A message was also shared from the monk about the lives that we live on this earth and how we should make it positive and to share goodness and care to others in hopes that when we die, we can also be reborn.  It was a lesson on philosophy of life and how we can make the world a better place as we make our own sphere of influence a positive one.  There is no mention of god or of salvation.  There are millions of people who may follow this religion or the many others that exist in this world today.

Back in Paul’s day, the same held true in terms of many people following idols and other man-made gods.  Due to their culture, they were only taught one way and were ignorant of the God that created heaven and earth.  There is only one God who created all things.  Other religions cannot make that claim and so this makes Christianity exclusive.  It is not very popular to say that the God of the Israelites is the only God to others, but God himself said He is a jealous God and there is no god like Him.   Every other statue are considered man-made and are idols.  We can only see God through his son, Jesus.
