6 They traveled through the whole island until they came to Paphos. There they met a Jewish sorcerer and false prophet named Bar-Jesus,7 who was an attendant of the proconsul, Sergius Paulus. The proconsul, an intelligent man, sent for Barnabas and Saul because he wanted to hear the word of God. 8 But Elymas the sorcerer (for that is what his name means) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul from the faith. 9 Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at Elymas and said, 10 “You are a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord? 11 Now the hand of the Lord is against you. You are going to be blind for a time, not even able to see the light of the sun.”
I heard on the news yesterday that two cars were driving on the road and they were shooting at each other. At the end, one person died of gun-shot wounds in the car. There is no update on whether it was gang-related, but it is a possibility where rival gangs see each other as enemies. If we have it our way, we would live in a way so that we would not have enemies. Most law-abiding citizens may not like a neighbour or a distant relative, but would not go to the extreme of identifying them as a enemy and then targeting them to hurt them.
The followers of Jesus had some opponents. The Pharisees never did accept Jesus and his followers. Sergius, Pauls, the proconsul sent for Barnabas and Saul to hear the word of God. It doesn’t say how Elymas the sorcerer tried to turn the proconsul from the faith, but Paul called him a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right. It reminds me that the devil is at work even though I may not have any people in my lives that I consider an enemy. The devil considers me an enemy and is constantly at work at trying to derail my faith just as satan worked through Elymas the sorcerer. So, I need to remember that my enemy is the devil who also opposed God and all that is good.
