Love Takes Action
1 John 3:17-20 (NIV)
17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.
Love is more than just an emotion as portrayed in many movies and shows. It is more than just attraction and more than arousal. It’s more than sentimentality. Over and over again in the Bible, God commands us to love each other. John is telling us that our love for each other should be more than words or speech, but in action and in truth. True love for someone is how you act toward that person. John is painting a picture of a brother or sister in need and how a person of faith can demonstrate their love for them. If love was just an emotion, then God would not command us to love each other, since you can’t command somebody to feel a certain way toward somebody if love was just an emotion or a feeling.
Jesus is the perfect example of action. When there were those who were sick, he healed them. When thousands were hungry, he had compassion and wanted them to eat. He looks at the basic needs of humans and sees to it that these needs are met. It’s time for you and me to take action to show love by following the example of Jesus.
