Lord Have Mercy
Judges 10:15-16 (NIV)
15 But the Israelites said to the Lord, “We have sinned. Do with us whatever you think best, but please rescue us now.” 16 Then they got rid of the foreign gods among them and served the Lord. And he could bear Israel’s misery no longer.
In the book of Judges, God’s people continued to be led astray by their idols before God sent a prophet or judge to lead them to repent. In desperate times, they would turn to God, but it was always short-lived when their conditions started to improve. God challenged their hearts when He told them that he will no longer save them and that they should cry out to their idols/gods when they are in trouble. God saw their misery and has compassion.
God saw their sincerity of their repentance when they got rid of all of their idols and confessed that they have sinned. They asked that God should do whatever He thinks best, but to please rescue them from their enemies, the Philistines and the Ammonites. God has a heart for us and doesn’t want us to suffer. He knows what is best for us during our times of sin and with our struggles with life.
God has great compassion and mercy and could no longer stand the misery of his people. When I am in quiet desperation with my struggles, I see this as a great example that God will not leave me alone. While we are still sinners, Christ died for us. God will not abandon me if I come back to Him.
