Look Around

Genesis 13:14-16 (NIV)

14 The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. 15 All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring[a] forever. 16 I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted.

Abram and his nephew Lot had plenty of flocks, herds and tents.  Their grazing land started to get too small as there were some disputes between their herders.  Abram suggested to Lot to pick the land he wants and if he goes right, then he’ll go left.  Lot looked and saw the whole plain of Jordan and saw that it was well watered, like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt.  He chose what was best for him.

As for Abram, he trusted that God will still look after him wherever he went.  Even though the land he went to in Canaan was not as good as the plain of the Jordan, he didn’t grumble or complain about the land that he had to go to.

We cannot change the cards that we are dealt, but we can change our emotions and behavior of how we react and respond to the cards that we are dealt in life.  God reminded Abram to look around from where you are.  Perhaps Abram was wondering what will happen next in the land of Canaan, and then God spoke up and reminded him of the promises that he has made to Abram.  God gave him a new vision of what is to come; a new beginning, a new journey in life.

When trouble or obstacle comes into my life, I need to think of it as another detour on my journey in life and there is always a way around or to go through the obstacle.  With God on my side, there should be no dead-end.  God told Abram to walk through the length and breadth of the land, for he is giving it to him and he will prosper in it.  If there is a new job, new project, new hobby, or anything that you want to change, just go for it and keep at it until you are satisfied with your success.  Look around from where you are and envision the potential and the opportunity of accomplishing your goals.
