Proverbs 9:10-11 (NIV)
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. For through wisdom your days will be many, and years will be added to your life.
How do you characterize long life? Is it attributed to healthy eating, good genes, sufficient sleep, stress free environment or just good luck? My great-grandmother lived to 98. My grandmother on my mother’s side lived to 97 and my grandmother on my father’s side is currently 96. My grandfather didn’t make it past 30 and my father didn’t make it past 60. Is that a bad omen for the men in the family?
This passage says that through wisdom we will have many days and years will be added to our life. What is this wisdom and where does it come from? The ESV version says that “For by me your days will be multiplied and the earlier verse in verse 10 says that wisdom comes from the fear of the Lord.
The statisticians have their mortality tables setup according to age, gender and use this for insurance purposes. God knows how long we will live. For some, their lives will be cut short. For others, they can live a very long life. This is despite their lifestyle or their belief system. It is up to God whether we will get to live a long life or live a shorter life.
As much as I want to take control and live a healthy lifestyle to live a long life, ultimately it is up to God on whether I will be able to live a long and fulfilled life. It sounds like a promise that you will get long life if you fear the Lord and commit to Him faithfully, but I also see that it also rains on the good and the evil. Just like you hear that bad things happen to good people, we all face death in due time and that due date is determined by God alone.
