Let The Light Shine
14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
When there is not enough lighting at home in a certain room, the atmosphere becomes gloomy and depressing. I have a light fixture that houses two light bulbs in both of my kids rooms. Their feedback was that it wasn’t bright enough, although I had two CFL’s installed on each side. The problem was the glass shade was textured and was diffusing the light too much. I went to the store and bought a new LED fixture which has built-in surface mount LED lights inside and a cover that was white. The difference was amazing. It illuminated the room and no corner of the room was dark anymore.
Jesus said that he is the light of the world and that if we follow him, we will not walk in darkness. Indeed, sin is like the cover, which diffuses that light. Other covers that we can put on is complacency and apathy. These will cover our light enough that most people will not know that we Christians. Fear and self-preservation, concerned about what others will think of us, is also an effective cover to minimize the light. Jesus wants us to imitate him and to let his light shine without any diffuser to limit the light shining through.
