Let Freedom Reign
Galatians 3:28 (NIV)
There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
Colossians 3:11 (NIV)
Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.
Martin Luther King Jr. was an exceptional man. I watched a re-run of his speech and it was moving. He spoke for freedom, justice and equality for all mankind. His speech, I have a dream on August 28th, 1963 will be remembered as a starting point for the breaking and abolishment of the divide between the Negro and the rest of the white population in America. He spoke of the drive for freedom without drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. There were basically no rights for the Negro, being degraded to 2nd class citizens.
The Bible has many passages about equality among those who follow Christ. In Galatians 3:28, we are all one in Christ Jesus. There is to be unity among all people, with no favouritism of one group over another. Colossians 3:11 echos that thought as well where there is equality.
God wants justice for the oppressed. In Psalm 9:9, the Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. It took some time for it to happen, but God was working to make it happen. Is there equality now? No, but the abolishment of slavery and apartheid in America closed the divide. There is still inequality in pay between men and women and for those who are a visible minority.
Near the end of the speech, Martin Luther King stressed “let freedom reign”. The good news is that in God’s kingdom, there is equality and there is freedom.
