Learn From The Past
Romans 15:4-7 (NIV)
4 For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.
5 May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, 6 so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
7 Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.
Daily life is not easy and Jesus can empathize with us as he lived a tough earthly life among sinners. In this life that we live, we need to deal with issues at work, traffic and transportation, our children, marriage and finances. It can go on to your health of the health of other family members as well. This life requires a mindset of endurance and the ability to fight through all trials and obstacles. Verse 4 tells us that what was written in the past was written to teach us. We see failures in the Scriptures, but we also see that there is endurance and hope as God ultimately brings about victory, fulfilling his promises over and over again. When you feel tired and worn out, it is God who gives endurance and encouragement. It is God who can help us by giving us the same attitude of mind just as Jesus had.
Much of this chapter is about accepting each other and bearing with those who are weak and to please our neighbours for their good. The example of Jesus demonstration on life was that he did not please himself, but ultimately pleased God. Jesus Christ accepted us as we are, so we need to accept others as they are. If we feel that we cannot, then you are right. On our own, we may not have the patience and attitude to bear with others who don’t have the same ideals as we do. You need God’s Spirit to work inside each of us, giving us endurance and encouragement to persevere in our relationships with each other. We can take encouragement that we can learn from those before us, whether it is from the Scriptures and even from friends or others who may have gone through the same life experience as you have gone through. As much as we can learn from others and the Scriptures, we can also learn from our past mistakes and how we can move forward in life, depending on God to guide us with His wisdom.
