Keeping Your Promises
1 Samuel 1:11 (ESV)
11 And she vowed a vow and said, “O Lord of hosts, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your servant and remember me and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a son, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall touch his head.”
When you want something, sometimes you’ll say you’ll do something just to get it. Hannah was barren and she prayed that she would have a child. She made a bold promise and God took her up on her offer. Her prayer was that is she had a son, then her son will belong to God and will serve God. When she did receive a son, she was faithful to her promise. She kept her words, as tough as it may be for a mother to give up her son. It must have been painful for Hannah, but at the same time, she understood the power of the spoken word. When you say you’re going to do something, do your best to do it. If you are a person who continues to be late for appointments or get-togethers due to ‘cultural’ reasons, then that is not honoring God. You’re not lying, but you are not showing a lot of integrity and responsibility.
If you plea with God with a promise, then you’d better keep your promise as God has demonstrated that he keeps his promises. In life, we do have opportunities to make promises. When we make our vows during our wedding, we make promises. How are you doing on those promises? I know that some of those promises of ‘cherishing’ your spouse in sickness and in health can be broken as we take for granted our relationship with out spouse.
It’s time to think about any promises that you make to your spouse, your kids, friends or even God. Take it seriously and keep your promise. Nowadays, we don’t even make promises to ourselves, as it is too stringent and we are holding ourselves accountable. Instead, we set goals instead of promises as it is easier to miss a goal than to break a promise. Next time you have something you want to accomplish, make a promise instead and see if you can get further by making that promise.
