Justified Through Faith
1Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
If you want to travel to a different country, you need to provide documentation such as a passport to show your country of origin. Only a valid passport will allow you to leave your own country and to enter another country. You can’t argue or convince the person at the airport checkout counter that you’re running late and you need help to get on that plane even though you have a ticket. The passport provides the justification for you to exit and enter other countries. Without the passport, you are stranded.
Paul is saying that we can have peace with God through Jesus Christ. Does it cost anything to gain access to it? There is no cost to it. We gain access with the faith that we have. We are justified by this faith through Jesus Christ and this faith allows us access to God. If we do not have a personal relationship with Jesus, we cannot gain access to a relationship with God. This grace is provided to us when we show our ‘passport’, which is our faith in Jesus Christ.
