Justified by His Grace
3 At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. 4 But when the kindness and love of God our Saviour appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Saviour, 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.
We live in a society in which there are laws and if you break these laws, you can be convicted and punished. It can range from small fines to years in jail, depending on the crime committed. In God’s laws, any sin separates us from God and will result in death. A God of justice cannot bend the rules, otherwise he would be a liar.
God is kind and full of love and didn’t want us to face spiritual death. We don’t deserve this mercy, but God saved us through Jesus Christ. He became sin for all of us so that we are justified by his grace and share in the inheritance of an eternal life in heaven. It means that we can stop our foolishness and have no regrets on how we use to live our lives when we were enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures.
