1 Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. 5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a person is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. 7 Therefore do not be partners with them.
If you ever watch TV, you will see ads for all types of products. Companies and even Government agencies are getting into Marketing to get you to spend your hard earned money. There are commercials for vacations and tourism, food products, pets, cars and even more commercials on casinos and lotteries. Most people who look at this list will have trouble going through this list and not be able to admit that they have been impacted by the world’s marketing engine, pushing them towards the worldly mindset of the flesh.
Paul reaffirms the narrow road to follow Jesus as there should not even be a hint of sexual immorality or any kind of impurity. Jesus warned that adultery occurs in the mind and in the eyes. The next one is greed, which spurs some towards the casinos, lotteries or the markets to gain earthly riches. Lastly, the followers of Christ should not engage in foolish talk or coarse joking. It comes down a checklist of those who can inherit the kingdom of God. Anybody who is immoral, impure of greedy is an idolater and therefore cannot inherit the Kingdom. It’s a higher calling and is in stark contrast to today’s marketing message. The message is to walk in the way of love and to follow God’s example.
