God of Comfort
2 Corinthians 1:3-7(NIV)
3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. 5 For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. 6 If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. 7 And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort.
When we are going through a rough time in life due to a death in the family, chronic health issues, financial hardships or a tough time in relationships at home or in work, it’s good to be able to have somebody to comfort us. If there is a death of a loved one, we’ve been taught to be strong and move on. We may not have properly mourned for that person and we move on, unaware of our need to be comforted.
Paul says that when we are going through our troubles, God will be there for us. He is the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort. Jesus Christ also went through distress and suffering so that he understands what we go through. We receive comfort from God so that we can also comfort those who are in trouble. God wants us to learn compassion through Jesus. We are naturally selfish, but can learn compassion by the example of Jesus and be able to provide comfort just as God comforts us.
