Gaining the Whole World
35 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. 36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?
In this world, we all have an appetite or desire in life. It could be to have a great meal, to go to school and graduate, to save up and buy your first home, to go to a vacation or to improve your chances of a promotion at work. We all have our wants and desires and we usually will do what we can to achieve these goals. We are physical beings and we will usually meet our physical needs as our first priority.
Jesus teaches us that there is a line where our ambition and desire can be so great that we do not meet the needs of our soul. Our soul has a desire to be with God and we need to wrestle with the balance of living our daily life and also to feed our soul spiritually. His question does make you think about what good is it to gain the whole world in exchange for your soul. Jesus brings the balance back to us as his question makes us ponder on the value of our lives and why we are on this earth. There is a supreme being and there is a call to keep that relationship with God as one of our priorities in life.
