For the Body
21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. 22 If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; 24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. 25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, 26 so that through my being with you again your boasting in Christ Jesus will abound on account of me.
I went to the gym the other day and joined in the action of doing some exercise and improving the condition of my body. As we age, the body doesn’t perform as well as it used to and there are more aches and pains just from day to day activity. Nutrition also plays a key role in keeping the body healthy. If we eat whatever we want, whenever we want, we will see our bodies get into bad shape and will result in disease and sickness.
Paul had a decision to make. His statement was about wanting to go to heaven and that is the ultimate goal for him. Christ is the reason for him to live and he desired to depart and be with Christ. However, he also knew that the body of Christ, which is the Church, needed his help to grow. His wisdom and passion for Christ helped to keep the body fit and healthy. He continued with the rest of his partners in Christ to help them grow in their joy in the faith. We can each have a role in taking care of the body of Christ by our actions and in our faith. We can help to strengthen the body.
