Follow The Clouds!
Exodus 40:36-37 (NIV)
36 In all the travels of the Israelites, whenever the cloud lifted from above the tabernacle, they would set out; 37 but if the cloud did not lift, they did not set out–until the day it lifted.
Imagine millions of people sitting around in the desert during the day. They’re talking, playing, singing, eating or laughing. God’s people did not go anywhere without His direction. When the cloud lifted above the tabernacle, they would then set out and if it did not, then the people knew that they would camp out in that area. The people are guided by God and it is still a characteristic of His followers today.
We don’t have clouds showing us where to go, but in Romans 8:14, it says that God’s children are led by the Spirit of God. The clouds are to the Israelites what the Holy Spirit is for us today. The Holy Spirit prompts us, reminds us, teaches us and guides us to be obedient to God’s words. The main difference is that as we get busy with our lives, we can be out of tune with the Holy Spirit. We can shut it out and ignore the Spirit’s guidance. We can choose when to follow and when to reject the teachings in the Bible.
The Israelites waited for the lifting of the cloud before they set out. They dare not attempt to go before the clouds moved. True wisdom comes when we wait for God’s leading in our lives. Sometimes we can run and do our own thing. I have a habit of doing and trying to do multiple projects and being scattered in many places. Patience will pay off in the long run in our lives and I think it will be good for me to practice patience and any goals and plans that I have should be set before God.
