Don’t Give Up
21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.”
23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.”
24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.”
25 The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said.
26 He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”
27 “Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”
28 Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.
I recall back in 2009 when the global markets went diving and many industries were hit hard. It was a global economic crisis that affected a lot of companies worldwide. I found myself on the outside, looking for work when there was no work. Every month, there will be an employment report of more jobs losses both in the United States and Canada. In fact, it was happening worldwide. I kept submitting resumes after resumes with little response. When there was an interview, I had to put my best foot forward, knowing that I am competing with many others who have also recently lost their positions. After a long period of unemployment, anybody could get desperate and accept any job at any pay.
This Canaanite woman was a foreigner, looking in from the outside. She saw something special about the Jewish race and saw what Jesus had to offer. She saw what the Pharisees, Sadducees and other Jews could not see. The people on the inside were asking Jesus for miracles and proof. This woman was asking Jesus for mercy and healing for her daugther. Jesus rejected her the first time. She continued to beg him and Jesus simply states that what he is offering is only for the Jews and should not be given to the ‘dogs’. She acknowledged that, but was only asking for crumbs. That’s how job seekers were like back then…just looking for crumbs. This woman had great faith and persevered until she got what she wanted, which was for her daughter to be healed. At that time, she also received spiritual healing as she would most likely continue to put her full trust and faith in Jesus for the rest of her life.
