Do Not Be Afraid
Deuteronomy 31:7-8 (NIV)
7 Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you must go with this people into the land that the Lord swore to their ancestors to give them, and you must divide it among them as their inheritance. 8 The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
Joshua was much younger then Moses, but he was to guide the rest of the nation to the promised land. He saw the good, the bad and mostly ugly in God’s people during their wandering in the desert. Even though Moses was like a god in the people’s sight, they still didn’t listen to Moses nor obeyed many of the commandments of God. God makes a promise that we are not alone and he will be there for us. When we encounter losses in our lives, we can lose sight of this promise from God. If Joshua was thinking of some doubts about how he would lead these people to the land that was flowing with milk and honey, then God gave him assurance. Likewise, we don’t know if the path we are currently taking will lead us where we want to go, but God is with us and will not leave us.
Grief and loneliness are major problems facing people today. Satan wants you to believe that you are alone and nobody understands your situation. Contrary to what Satan wants you to believe, God does love us and want us to know that he doesn’t want us to be afraid and be discouraged. That’s good news to me and I should carry those words if thoughts of discouragement come my way. I am reminded to be strong and courageous no matter what I do.
