Continuing to Give
14 Yet it was good of you to share in my troubles. 15 Moreover, as you Philippians know, in the early days of your acquaintance with the gospel, when I set out from Macedonia, not one church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you only; 16 for even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me aid more than once when I was in need. 17 Not that I desire your gifts; what I desire is that more be credited to your account. 18 I have received full payment and have more than enough. I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God. 19 And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.
I met up with a friend for lunch at a restaurant that was part of a larger plaza. The traffic was very busy as people are driving to the malls and plazas to buy gifts to give for Christmas. Kids are making their Christmas wish lists and the lists are being checked off as items are being purchased to bring joy and fun for the kids.
Paul had some needs as he was on his missionary journey. He didn’t make a big wish list of things that he wanted. Instead, he was very content and didn’t require very much. He was very grateful for the gifts that were given to him. It showed the hearts of the disciples who were very generous and continued to give to him time and time again. God wants us to be a cheerful giver and to come from the heart. Some people are naturally good at being generous in their giving. For those who are not so strong, we can use the example of Jesus and how he continued to give of his time and energy to others without fail.
