Boasting About Tomorrow
1Do not boast about tomorrow,
for you do not know what a day may bring.
2 Let someone else praise you, and not your own mouth;
an outsider, and not your own lips.
Most of us plan on our future. We all have short-term goals, medium-term goals and long-term goals. We may not have a list of it under these titles, but we have it in the back of our mind. If we are thinking about our retirement goals, that would be classified as our long-term goal. If we are planning a vacation, then that would be a medium-term goal. Our plan for tomorrow and next week is our short-term goal. There is a difference between our plans and our boasting about it. In Luke 12:18, the rich fool was boasting about his riches and his plan on building even bigger barns to store his wealth. In the book of Daniel, Nebuchadnezzar also boasted about his splendor and how he did all himself.
When the rich man and Nebuchadnezzar boasted about their accomplishments and their future and gave no credit to God, they were judged on their pride. This proverb reminds us that we do not know about tomorrow and cannot be prideful in our hearts. God gives us the ability to work and gives us the talent to use for His glory as I remind myself it is God who gives me the ability each and every day to do certain things. It is God who knows about our future and it is best to lay our plans before Him.
