1 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
Unity is one of the hardest things to achieve in society. We have so many cultural identities and different backgrounds that will affect our belief systems. When people move to a new country, they are told to adapt to the new country’s laws and to change some of their belief systems. They may end up moving to an area where their ethnic community congregates in a certain area of the city. This allows them to live as they had in the past and continue to speak their old language without having to learn the new language. For somebody coming to a new country, it is humbling as you do need to ask a lot of questions and ask for a lot of help.
Followers of Christ also have varied backgrounds. There was a big difference in the Mosaic Law and the new covenant of the followers of Christ. They had to give up their old belief system on following the law and follow the new teachings of Jesus and of the Apostles. They learned about love, grace, mercy and compassion. Paul reminds them of being humble and considering others better than themselves and that would include the non-believers. They have received a gift of salvation and mercy and it would be easy to become conceited of knowing more and being chosen and blessed. Be humble so that we can serve others and make others feel that people care and love them.
